BERNARDS TOWNSHIP, NEW JERSEY, USA

Welcome to our historic town! Liberty Corner, is a small unincorporated village situated at the junction of Church Street and Valley and Lyons Roads. It is located in an area West and South West in the Township of Bernards in Somerset County. Its history can be traced back through William Penn's land grant patents and to 1722 when John Johnston of Annandale, Scotland, arrived in Bernards to purchase just over 1,000 acres of this rich New Jersey farm land from Penn's proprietors.

About fifty years later or so the growing farm settlement became know as Annin's Corner after a later settler, William Annin. William Annin arrived in the area around 1764. He and his son John, built a house of stone with local help using stones carried from the neighboring quarry. Though the house is no longer standing, there were initials on the blocks "W.A" and "H.S.M", along with the date, indicating the builder (William Annin) and the mason (Hugh Sunderland).

Sometime during the American Revolution, the name of the farm settlement changed from Annin's Corner to Liberty Corner. But there was a transitional period where the area was also known as Bullion's Tavern after the tavern in the center of town.

Annin's stone house was destroyed in August 1781. Its location was across the street from the present day English Farm, also the site of the historic Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary trail through Liberty Corner.

It was a "Liberty Pole" erected on the village green circa 1776 complete with the red knit cap 'capping.' that earned Liberty Corner its name. Such poles were erected in many towns and villages of the era to celebrate the spirit and courage of their compatriots. It was a pole long since lost with the words 'Liberty' posted a an red cap a top the pole, to commemorate the freedom and independence and the village's American feeling for Liberty, that gave meaning to this small patriotic  town of Liberty Corner.
